Welcome to Rushden Golf Club
Rushden Golf Course provides an attractive and challenging 18 holes, blending holes that have been played and developed over 90 years with a range of professional designed new holes with the highest specifications that offer stunning views over the local countryside. It is a parkland course in a rural setting to the east of Rushden and Higham Ferrers in Northamptonshire.
Located on the B645 between Higham Ferrers and Chelveston and surrounded by open fields and countryside, the holes on the par 71 course offer both variety and challenge to the low handicapper, while still providing an enjoyable experience for the ordinary club golfer.
The present site of the golf course and the club’s constitution were established in 1919 and originally named the ‘Rushden and District Golf Club’. The word ‘District’ was removed in 1986. The club began some years prior to 1919 with a small group of local business men marking out and playing a few holes in a field at Stanwick. During this period Mr G A Wetenhall inaugurated the club’s first competition, presenting a silver trophy. The first recorded winner was Mr G S Mason in 1908.
The first 59 years of the club’s tenancy to the Duchy of Lancaster was a sub-let arrangement via the adjacent farmer. The farmer had grazing rights which meant up to 200 sheep could be on the course. This lease gave the farmer authority over the mowing frequency and height of fairways and rough grass could be cut, also the type and quantity of trees that could be planted. With farmer, Harry Robinson’s death in 1978 the club negotiated a direct lease with the Duchy, hence no more sheep and freedom to develop the course!
