Welcome to London Scottish Golf Club
London Scottish Golf Club is set in beautiful heath and woodland by the windmill on Wimbledon Common. An out of the ordinary golf course, it is the longest continuously played-upon links in England. Sited on gravel, it drains fantastically well and never has temporary greens.
The club was founded in 1865 by members of the London Scottish Rifle volunteers, and has a grade II listed wood panelled clubhouse – one of the few in Britain that remain from the Victorian era. Unusually, as the course is set within a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it has no sand bunkers, although it has grass versions that are tough to get out of in the summer.
The great golf writer Bernard Darwin, CBE. in his classic book Historic Golf Courses of the British Isles, first published in 1910, even then revelled in the “old fashioned air” and “naturalness” of the London Scottish course, noting that “those clumps of gorse and the deep ravines where the birches grow were put there by the hand of nature herself, who if she be not so cunning, is at any rate infinitely more artistic than any golfing architect”.
Little has changed since then: the course is the perfect antidote to the modern obsession with landscaping and length.
Local Byelaws state that golfers must wear a pillar box red upper garment. The club can provide tops if you forget to bring one!!
